art studio addition to a historic monument residence in eagle rock. the house is one of the oldest in eagle rock and was built by famed plein-aire painter hanson puthuff. the current owners are plein-aire painters as well and were seeking to build a light airy space in which to paint. the owners took an active role in the design, even building their own models. we worked closely with the los angeles planning department's office of historic resources to come up with a design that is a subtle reinterpretation rather than a copy of the craftsman aesthetic. the final design incorporates an existing pergola uses the idea of the enclosed porch to bridge the interior and exterior, both physically and metaphorically.
construction documents in progress.
